Student Participates in the Commission on Population and Development at the United Nations 6/1/2015 Policy; Students Share this Story: Ja Kyung (Maria) Jang, MSW ’15, participated in the 48th Session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD48) at the United Nations from April 13-17, 2015. “It was a great experience to observe the process of the international negotiations on the population issues such as reproductive health, child mortality, and migration,” she said. She was selected by the Council for American Students in International Negotiations to participate as a student delegate. The council is a non-governmental organization that consults with the Economic and Social Council of the UN. The main topic for the session was “Realizing the Future We Want: Integrating Population Issues into Sustainable Development.” Large parts of the session involved a discussion of the implementation and the monitoring of the programs on population issues. Maria said diverse views and perspectives contributed to the four-day negotiations. No agreement was reached, but she said the session suggested where each of the delegates stood and provided the idea for the next steps to be taken. “I strongly recommend other Brown students apply for the student delegate opportunity of CASIN to gain global perspectives, and to observe the international negotiations and the dynamics at United Nations,” she said.
