Biography

Josephine’s research is dedicated to designing and implementing interventions that address structural barriers to women’s empowerment, with a specific focus on adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in low-resource settings. Grounded in empowerment theory, asset theory, and the theory of gender and power, her work uses mixed-methods approaches to examine the interconnected drivers of HIV, intimate partner violence (IPV), and mental health challenges. A key and growing area of her research investigates climate change as a critical structural determinant of health, specifically its intersection with IPV and HIV outcomes. Informed by over nine years of community engagement in Uganda, her work generates insights applicable to underserved communities globally. She is committed to developing scalable, trauma-informed, and contextually relevant solutions that are both evidence-based and community-informed. This research has been published in high-impact journals including The LancetSocial Science & MedicineAIDS and Behavior, and Prevention Science. As Managing Editor of Global Social Welfare and a coordinator with the IMPACT Global Center, she actively supports the translation of research into meaningful and sustainable impact for partners at all levels
