Why St. Louis?
Because Impact Starts Here
When you arrive in St. Louis, you enter more than a city. You step into a living classroom. This is a place rich in history, alive with culture, and deeply complex in its challenges. For social work and social policy students, there is no better setting to learn, practice, and lead.
A Living Lab for Change
Here, your training goes beyond the classroom. You’ll work with neighborhoods, agencies, advocacy groups, and community initiatives that are shaping the future of social work and policy. St. Louis offers opportunities to engage with the issues that matter most:
- Health equity through hospitals, clinics, and community-based providers.
- Housing and education through grassroots organizations and public systems.
- Economic opportunity and mental health through nonprofits, advocacy groups, and direct service agencies.
This is where learning meets practice, and where ideas quickly become action.
The St. Louis Effect
We call it The St. Louis Effect. It’s the unique way people here come together to solve problems and create lasting change. For the Brown School’s own legacy of innovation, St. Louis has always been a place where bold ideas take root and transform lives. Day by day. Partnership by partnership. We partner with organizations already working where need is greatest.
The Brown School works hand in hand with community organizations across the region, connecting students to projects that matter. Whether through evaluation, advocacy, or direct service, you’ll be part of the teams advancing health equity, strengthening nonprofits, and expanding opportunity.
The St. Louis Effect is about more than innovation. It’s about resilience, collaboration, and a shared belief that communities can shape a better future. Here, progress is not abstract. It’s lived.
Legacy and Leadership
It’s no accident the Brown School is in St. Louis. Our history teaches us that a university should serve its city. In 1909, that belief gave rise to the Brown School, the fourth school of social work in the nation. Since then, we’ve grown into one of the most respected programs in the world—ranked #2 nationally, known for groundbreaking research, and the most prolific producer of social work deans.
Generations of students have trained here, carrying forward a simple but powerful idea: make society better, together.
Why St. Louis, Why Now
Some students hesitate when they see “Missouri” on the map. Yet for future social workers, scholars, and policy leaders, St. Louis is exactly where you want to be. Every challenge you’ll face in your career is here: inequities in health, education, housing, and opportunity. If you want to make an impact, start where the need is real and the opportunities to lead are immediate.
At the Brown School, your education will be high-touch, high-impact, and deeply connected to the community. You’ll join a network of practitioners, advocates, and scholars committed to action. You’ll discover that social work is more than a profession: it’s a calling. Today, more than ever, social work is a verb. And it begins here.
