Morgan Van Vleck, MSW ’22, a doctoral student at the WashU Brown School, has been selected for the 2026 Association for Gerontology Education in Social Work (AGESW) Gerontological Social Work Pre-Dissertation Fellows Program.
Van Vleck is one of 12 scholars in the program’s 2026 cohort. The fellowship prepares doctoral students for careers in gerontological social work research and education through training, mentorship and professional development. As part of the fellowship, Van Vleck will receive a $1,200 stipend to attend the AGESW Pre-Dissertation Fellows Training at the 2026 GSA Annual Scientific Meeting.
Van Vleck’s research focuses on exploring structural factors that impact well-being at end-of-life, particularly among marginalized patients and their caregivers. Most recently, their work explores how machine learning-based mortality prediction tools in hospital settings shape access to palliative care and advance care planning for those nearing end-of-life.
“I am excited to join the AGESW community to advance my skills in gerontological education and gain training from leading scholars as I advance in my program and prepare for my dissertation,” Van Vleck said.
Van Vleck has worked in community and clinical settings, including as a social worker with BJC Hospice. They also served as a research coordinator with SAGE USA, supporting research and advocacy efforts to improve services and support for LGBTQ+ older adults.
Van Vleck is co-mentored by Vanessa Fabbre, associate professor at the Brown School, and Karla Washington, associate professor of medicine at WashU School of Medicine.
