Cal Halvorsen, an associate professor at the Brown School, has been named a CoGen Impact Fellow by CoGenerate, a national nonprofit dedicated to fostering a multigenerational society.
Halvorsen is one of just 11 individuals selected nationwide as fellows, recognized for their efforts to bridge generational divides and address pressing societal challenges. As a fellow, he will advise GoGenerate on topics including national survey research and program impact and evaluation.
Halvorsen’s research focuses on aging populations and later-life work, including self-employment, volunteering, intergenerational initiatives, and the experiences of low-income older adults in the workforce.
This new role as a CoGen Impact Fellow builds on his long-standing relationship with the organization. After graduating with his MSW from the Brown School in 2008, Halvorsen worked for CoGenerate (then called Encore.org) in Washington, D.C., and Ann Arbor, Michigan, on research studies and new initiatives to help people past midlife transition into socially impactful work. Since 2020, he has served as a senior research fellow with CoGenerate.
Halvorsen has contributed to major studies, including Cogeneration: Is America Ready to Unleash a Multigenerational Force for Good? (2022) and Can Bringing Older and Younger People Together Renew Religious Communities? (2025). He has also worked with CoGenerate to publish datasets and document experiences launching new programs that support leaders of intergenerational initiatives, resources now available for use by researchers, advocates, and program developers.
