Faculty; Social Work

Fred Ssewamala and Proscovia Nabunya, faculty members at the Brown School, have been named 2025 Fellows of the Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR).

Ssewamala, the William E. His work develops and evaluates economic empowerment and social protection interventions to improve life chances and long-term developmental impacts for children and adolescent youth impacted by poverty and health disparities in low-resource communities.

Nabunya, an assistant professor and ICHAD co-director, focuses her research on reducing HIV-related stigma, improving mental health, and fostering family and community-based support systems to protect and enhance the well-being of children and families impacted by HIV/AIDS.

McKay

Mary McKay, executive vice provost, SMART Africa principal investigator, and former dean of the Brown School, was also named a 2025 Fellow. The three join 18 other honorees recognized for their significant contributions to advancing the Society’s mission to promote research that addresses critical issues in social work practice and policy while fostering a diverse, equitable, and just society.

The fellowship honors members for their leadership, accomplishments, and dedication to the field and encourages them to serve as mentors and role models for the next generation of social work researchers.

The Class of 2025 will be inducted at the SSWR Annual Conference, January 15-19, 2025, in Seattle, Washington.
