Remembering Michael Brown 8/9/2024 Social Work Share this Story: Dear Friends and Colleagues,Today, we commemorate the ten-year anniversary of the killing of Michael Brown. Even as time passes, the pain of his loss continues, and we must first offer our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and neighbors. We hope they take solace in knowing that out of this unspeakable tragedy, a powerful movement committed to reconciliation, healing, and change continues. The Ferguson Uprising, the protests following Michael Brown’s death, sparked passionate calls for social justice and racial equity. In response, Missouri Governor Nixon established the Ferguson Commission, which was charged with investigating the underlying issues behind the unrest in Ferguson and beyond. This thoughtful group held more than 70 public meetings and engaged over 3,000 community members who shared their stories and lived experiences. The Commission’s report, “Forward Through Ferguson: A Path Toward Racial Equity” provides an assessment of racial inequities and details 189 calls to action, creating a road map for advancing racial equity throughout the St. Louis region and the nation. Forward Through Ferguson, the organization entrusted with implementing the calls to action, has made significant strides in promoting racial equity and social justice. They have helped catalyze collaboration and action in our region. The ongoing movement for racial justice and anti-Black violence continues. As we reflect on the past ten years, we must be unflinching in our commitment to achieve racial justice and equity.
