Byron Powell, an associate professor at the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis, has once again been recognized among the world’s most highly cited researchers. This marks his seventh appearance on the annual list.
Powell is among 6,868 researchers named to Clarivate’s 2025 Highly Cited Researchers list. The list highlights researchers whose work ranks in the top 1% by citations for their field and publication year in the Web of Science Core Collection over the past 11 years. Selection also considers other quantitative measures, expert judgment, and qualitative analysis.
Powell’s research has been primarily funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), and he has authored more than 180 publications. His work focuses on improving the quality of health services by strengthening organizational and system capacity to implement evidence-based practices.
In addition to his faculty role, Powell serves as associate dean for research at the Brown School, and plays a central role in advancing implementation science at WashU. He is associate director of the Implementation Research Institute (IRI), a co-director of both the Dissemination and Implementation Science Innovation Research Network and the Center for Mental Health Services Research, and co-editor-in-chief of Implementation Research and Practice.
Reflecting on the recognition, Powell emphasized the collaborative nature of his work.
“Implementation science is about closing the gap between evidence and practice. That work is only possible through deep collaboration among researchers, clinicians, and community partners,” he said.
Powell added, “I’m grateful for the teams I’ve had the privilege to learn from and honored that our research is being cited and used across health, social services, education, and many other sectors. I’m also deeply appreciative of the opportunity to work at WashU. We have an outstanding community of implementation researchers and practitioners, interdisciplinary collaboration has been seamless, and there is strong support for partnerships that extend nationally and internationally.”
