Brown School Offers Affordable Housing and Mixed-Income Community Management Certificate

The Brown School, in partnership with NeighborWorks America, is offering an Affordable Housing and Mixed-Income Community Management certificate, composed of three intensive courses. These courses are open to Brown School and other university students, as well as professionals looking to gain new skills.

The program marries training in the financial capabilities associated with housing management with the skills of social work to help course graduates implement holistic strategies that effectively serve both clients and operations. The first course runs August 15 – 19, 2016, with continuing sessions in January and March 2017.

“Those enrolled will gain key skills, knowledge and tactics to successfully manage property and services in affordable housing, maximize performance and manage assets, and strategize for sustainable growth,” said Barbara Levin, coordinator of the Brown School’s Alliance for Building Capacity.

“These courses have helped me to integrate into the community development field post-graduation,” said Noel McKay, social services coordinator for Horizon Housing Foundation. “In my current job, being able to speak the dual languages of affordable housing management and social work has helped me to build important connections that can make affordable housing work better for those who need it, when those connections are too often overlooked.”

Course faculty are NeighborWorks America training professionals, and the intensive course series allows for certificate completion within six months. Each course has a full course or partial course option, and social work continuing education units are available.
